Old Malta

The beautiful islands of the Maltese archipelago, in the central Mediterranean area, are home to about 70 non-marine mollusc species. Isolation of the terrain from the mainland since the Pleistocene epoch has resulted in the evolution of a number of endemic species, including 25 plant species, various molluscs (marine or otherwise), a reptile and at least one mammal.

The purpose of this website is to illustrate a few of the endemic species of terrestrial snails, hopefully increasing awareness about a very small part of the unique heritage bestowed upon this land.
